Chandigarh Power Outages: CPDL Faces Backlash Over Failures
Introduction
The Chandigarh Administration has issued a stern directive to Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) to address the ongoing issue of power outages and to enhance the reliability of electricity services in the city.
The Chandigarh Administration has issued strict directions to Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL)to resolve the recurring issue of Chandigarh power outages and strengthen the city’s electricity network. This order comes just five months after CPDL took charge of electricity distribution, raising questions about its readiness and performance.
In recent weeks, Chandigarh has suffered major disruptions, including a seven-hour blackout that hit several sectors. The outage was triggered by a moisture-induced busbar flash at the Sector 56 substation, exposing the fragile state of the current infrastructure. Such breakdowns not only disturb residents but also affect businesses and essential services.
During a review meeting, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma expressed dissatisfaction with CPDL’s handling of the crisis. Officials admitted that the anti-hygroscopic paint applied before the monsoon had failed to prevent moisture damage, sparking concerns about the quality of materials used in maintenance.
Chandigarh’s power system plays a vital role, given its position as both a union territory and the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. The recent transfer of distribution to CPDL was meant to improve efficiency, yet the setbacks seen within a few months reveal that significant improvements are still required.
Acknowledging the criticism, CPDL announced immediate steps such as deploying dehumidifiers in vulnerable substations. These measures aim to reduce humidity-related failures and prevent further disruptions during monsoon conditions.
Frequent power failures have a serious impact on daily life, from disrupting productivity to affecting hospitals and schools. The Administration’s strong stance underlines growing public demand for accountability and dependable services.
On a broader level, electricity distribution in India faces mounting pressure due to rapid urbanization. While privatization aimed to enhance efficiency, inconsistent infrastructure and weak planning often lead to frustration among citizens, particularly during extreme weather.
The Administration has also emphasized the need for stronger regulatory oversight. By fostering collaboration, ensuring transparency, and sharing best practices, officials hope to build a more reliable system and restore public trust.
In conclusion, Chandigarh’s transition in power distribution underscores the urgent need for stability and reliability. Residents expect CPDL to act quickly, learn from early failures, and maintain proactive measures like dehumidifier deployment. As the city grows, preventing Chandigarh power outages remains critical to its development and everyday life.

Oxford Union Debate Cancelled: Indo-Pak Face-Off Ends in Controversy and Accusations
A highly anticipated Oxford Union debate on India’s Pakistan policy collapsed on Thursday night amid confusion and accusations between the two delegations. The event, scheduled to discuss the motion “This House Believes That India’s Response to Pakistan Is a Populist Strategy Sold as Security Policy,” never took place. Instead, the evening descended into public recrimination and conflicting statements.
The debate organizers faced criticism from the start. Moosa Harraj, the Oxford Union President, organized the event. Notably, he is the son of Pakistan’s Minister of Defence Production. Additionally, Raza Nazar, another Pakistani national, served as the Treasurer. Therefore, questions arose about potential bias in the organization.
The original Indian speakers, former Army Chief General MM Naravane and Dr. Subramanian Swamy, withdrew just two days before the debate due to unavoidable commitments. Consequently, organizers scrambled to find replacement speakers. Senior advocate J Sai Deepak flew from Delhi and handled his court hearings remotely from London to participate. Furthermore, UK-based activist Manu Khajuria and dharmic scholar Pt. Satish K Sharma joined him at the last minute.
However, chaos erupted on the day of the debate. At 3:13 pm local time, Sai Deepak received a call saying the Pakistan team had not landed in London. Later, at 4:55 pm, Harraj admitted he had known since 10 am that Pakistan’s speakers would not attend. The Pakistani delegation included Zubair Mahmood Hayat, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
Meanwhile, the Oxford Union offered the Indian speakers a debate against students rather than against other speakers. The Indian team declined this alternative arrangement, believing it changed the fundamental nature of the event.
At 2:44 pm, the Pakistan High Commission in London tweeted that the Indian delegation had withdrawn. Moreover, they claimed this “last-minute decision reflects a lack of confidence” in defending India’s Pakistan policy. The statement accused India of preferring “partisan media platforms” over “neutral and intellectually rigorous debate.”
Indian Delegation Backs Out Of Oxford Union Debate At Last Minute, Hands Walkover to Pakistani side
The Pakistan High Commission in London @PakistaninUK regrets to announce that the Indian delegation scheduled to participate in a high profile debate at the Oxford Union…
— Pakistan High Commission London (@PakistaninUK) November 27, 2025
Sai Deepak strongly disputed these claims. He learned on Friday that the Pakistan delegation had actually arrived in Oxford. Therefore, he accused the event organizers of acting as a “mouthpiece for the Pakistan High Commission.” He criticized the entire arrangement as “shambolic” and full of organizational failures.
“If we knew the Pakistan team had landed, we would have debated them,” Sai stated. He challenged the Pakistani speakers to find the courage to debate if they were still in Oxford. Additionally, he described the situation using colorful language, calling it “Operation Manhoos ki phati hui Baniyan.”
The Indian speaker emphasized that instead of conducting a civil debate, the Oxford Union allowed Pakistan to claim a false victory. Furthermore, he noted that other prominent Indians, including Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and marketing consultant Suhel Seth, had been approached too late to participate effectively.
This controversial cancellation of the Oxford Union debate highlights the challenges of organizing politically sensitive international discussions and the importance of transparent communication among all parties involved.

Air India Crash Investigation: Tensions Between US and Indian Authorities Over Probe
The Air India crash investigation has revealed significant tensions between Indian and American authorities following the tragic Flight 171 accident. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed on June 12 near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing 260 people. Consequently, this became the first fatal crash involving a Dreamliner aircraft.
The disaster killed all but one of the 242 passengers and crew aboard the flight. Additionally, 19 people on the ground died when the aircraft plummeted into a medical student hostel. Therefore, investigators from both countries rushed to determine what caused this devastating accident.
However, the probe quickly encountered serious disagreements between officials. The main flashpoint came in late June when two US National Transportation Safety Board specialists arrived in New Delhi. Indian authorities had arranged for them to take a late-night military flight to a remote facility in Korwa. Meanwhile, they planned to analyze the flight data and cockpit voice recorders there.
✈️🔥 WSJ’s latest report on the Ahmedabad–London Air India crash is explosive:
US investigators allege that they were stopped at the Delhi airport, NTSB threatened to pull out, and black-box decoding became a diplomatic tug-of-war.@WSJ claims fuel-flow to both engines was cut… pic.twitter.com/gTf5Xsb8zG
— Colonel Mayank Chaubey (@col_chaubey) November 29, 2025
Jennifer Homendy, chair of the NTSB, urgently intervened to block this plan. She cited security concerns flagged by the US State Department regarding terrorism and military conflicts in the region. Furthermore, embassy officials rushed to stop the specialists at the airport. As a result, the team remained in Delhi instead of traveling to the remote location.
The US side repeatedly pushed for the immediate extraction of black-box data in either Delhi or Washington. Moreover, Homendy warned she would withdraw American support if delays continued. She issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that Indian authorities choose between these two locations. Subsequently, she made urgent calls to transportation officials and executives from Boeing and GE Aerospace.
Indian officials eventually agreed to download the black-box data in Delhi using specialized equipment supplied by the NTSB. Nevertheless, this became a high point of tension between the two investigating teams.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the preliminary data showed that switches controlling fuel flow to both engines moved to cut off shortly after takeoff. The switches transitioned from run to cutoff one after another at a one-second interval. Additionally, cockpit recordings suggested the first officer attempted to recover the aircraft while the captain remained calm.
These findings led many American government and industry officials to privately believe the evidence points toward deliberate action. However, Indian officials remain cautious about endorsing this interpretation without a complete investigation.
GVG Yugandhar, chief of India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, emphasized his agency’s capabilities during the probe. He reportedly told American investigators that India wasn’t a “Third World country” and could handle the investigation independently.
The Supreme Court of India issued notices to the government and the aviation regulator, DGCA, regarding the case. The court observed that nobody should be blamed prematurely, stating “the pilot is not to be blamed… it was an accident.” Therefore, the court emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before concluding.
The Air India crash investigation continues with enormous stakes for global aviation safety. Boeing’s Dreamliner remains one of the world’s most widely used long-haul jets, making this investigation critically important for international air travel.
