Established by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali (IISER Mohali) is an autonomous public research university that awards its own degrees to its graduates. It was created in the year 2007 by the government of India, to produce a better crop of scientists. This aims in producing academic talent, innovation, discoveries and researches in all fields of science. It is located in Sector 81, Manauli PO, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Punjab 140306 India, and is one of the seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) in the nation.

The main objective is to research in the frontier areas of science and to provide science education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The integrated Ph.D. program was also started in the year 2012 to nurture future scientists.

IISER Mohali’s fully residential campus is coming up on 125 acres of land given by the Punjab Government, in the Knowledge City at Sector 81 Mohali. However, most of the buildings in the initial phase has been completed and are in use. With a faculty of 70, various programs for 870 students are being conducted along with cutting edge research in basic sciences. It was established after IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata, hence is recognized as a major institute of the science by the Government of India.

IISER provides a lot of opportunities in the field of basic science and a concrete future in the research field. It is a 5 year integrated BS-MS course offering institute. In the first year, the students are taught all the science subjects such as (physics, chemistry, bio, math, computer science, geological science), in order for them to have the basic idea of all the subjects.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

  1. The IISER admissions are conducted in three channels: JEE, KVPY, and SCB. 
  • KVPY Channel – Applying Seekers who have a valid KVPY fellowship commencing for the current and next academic session are eligible to apply for admissions. However, Additional cut-off criteria are usually there but this is the major entrance hurdle.
  • JEE Advanced Channel – Applying Seekers in General category securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Rank List (CRL) of JEE Advanced are also eligible to apply. For candidates belonging to the reserved category (OBCNC, SC, ST, PD), their category rank should be within 10000.
  • SCB Channel. – Aspirants who have passed (10+2) level with science stream in 2019 or 2020 with marks equal or above the cut-off percentage in their respective boards are eligible to apply for IAT. In addition to that, Students applying through the SCB channel will have to appear in the IISER organized test which will be conducted at various centers across the country.

2) For admission in the Ph.D. Program, the students need to clear the National level examination like GATE, NET, etc. However, the additional requirements for eligibility are as follows :

  • A degree of Bachelor of Technology/ Master in Arts/ Bachelor in Architecture/ M.Phil/ MS or equivalent.
  • Applications must be filled out before the due date which is usually done online.
  • 60% + marks in 10+2 is essential.
  • Apart from applying online, an applicant SHOULD send a statement of proposed research (minimum Fifteen thousand words) to the following email address: [email protected] mentioning the broad subject area as the subject of the email, failing which the application may not be considered for shortlisting. This email address is intended ONLY to submit the research proposal statement.

IS IISER BETTER THAN IIT's?

IITs are designed with 40% research and 60% teaching and are great if you want to do Btech or looking for more industry jobs. Above all, their focus is to produce the best engineers in the country.

IISERs are opposite in nature with more focus on research and less teaching concepts. They also believe in teaching by research, as they are designed to make scholars hence no Btech courses are run or taught there.

In conclusion, having said that, both are the type of institutes which have a very good faculty with many active research labs and high impact research papers. They both excel in the type of studies performed there. Both are made for people who are in love with the sciences and want to contribute to society through this field.

Therefore, I would recommend checking the faculty who may be working with the subject of your interest, read their finding/research, approach them once you are ready for thesis, checking out the on-campus facility, going for a college tour, etc, work with them and make your path to higher education with their support (into Ph.D./Post Doctoral level).
