Former Prime Minister Imran Khan sisters protest has demanded an independent investigation into what they describe as a brutal police assault. Moreover, they claim authorities have prevented them from meeting their brother for over a month at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The situation has sparked widespread concern about Khan’s well-being and detention conditions.

Sisters Allege Violent Treatment: Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan, and Dr Uzma Khan gathered outside Adiala Jail last week with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters. They peacefully protested, demanding to meet their brother who has been imprisoned since August 2023. However, police personnel allegedly attacked them without warning or provocation.

Noreen Niazi, aged 71, described the incident in detail in a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar. She stated that officers deliberately switched off streetlights to create darkness. Subsequently, what followed was an orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel against peaceful protesters.

“I was seized by my hair, thrown violently to the ground, and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries,” Noreen explained. Additionally, she reported that other women present faced similar treatment, being slapped and dragged by police officers.

The sisters emphasized that their protest remained entirely peaceful. They neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement. Furthermore, they engaged in no unlawful conduct whatsoever. Nevertheless, police responded with what they characterize as excessive and unwarranted force.

In their letter, the sisters described police conduct as “wholly criminal, illegal, morally reprehensible, and in direct contradiction to the foundational duties of any law enforcement agency in a democratic society.” Consequently, they demanded immediate proceedings against all police personnel involved in the assault.

PTI officials echoed these concerns, calling for an impartial investigation. The party maintains that Khan’s sisters committed no crime by simply seeking to meet their imprisoned brother.

Khan has remained in Adiala Jail for over 16 months now, facing multiple legal cases. The government has reportedly placed an undeclared ban on family meetings for more than one month. This extended isolation has raised serious concerns among Khan’s supporters and family members.

According to PTI, Khan exists in complete isolation and solitary confinement. Moreover, jail authorities have allegedly blocked even basic necessities. Khalid Yousaf Chaudry, a lawyer associated with Khan’s legal team, told the media that books, essential items, and access to lawyers face restrictions.

“The law of the jungle prevails here, where only the beast who rules has rights. No one else has any rights,” Chaudry stated, expressing frustration with the detention conditions.

The access restrictions extend beyond family members. Even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi could not meet Khan despite making seven consecutive attempts. Jail authorities, whom Khan claims operate under the control of an army officer, denied all these requests.

This pattern of denials has fueled speculation and concern. Furthermore, false rumors about Khan’s death have circulated on social media, intensifying family members’ anxiety about his well-being.

This week, Khan’s sisters attempted another protest outside Adiala Jail. Initially, police stopped them at Factory Naka, prompting PTI supporters to stage a sit-in. The protest, livestreamed on social media platforms X and YouTube, lasted several hours.

Aleema Khan questioned why authorities continue denying family access. “Who knows, maybe Imran has been shifted. Why are they not letting us meet him?” she asked during the livestream.

Eventually, the protest ended at the request of Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen leader Allama Raja Nasir. He suggested focusing attention on the families of those killed in previous PTI clashes with law enforcement. Aleema agreed, saying they would visit these families to express solidarity.

However, she insisted the family would continue efforts to meet Khan. “Tomorrow, they will call the families of the martyrs in Hayatabad. So we will go there,” she explained. And Aleema Khan ends 10-hour sit-in at Gorakhpur checkpoint.

During the protest, Islamabad Senior Superintendent of Police Rana Tanveer arrived to negotiate with Khan’s sisters. He attempted to convince them to disperse the protesters. Nevertheless, negotiations failed as PTI supporters remained adamant about continuing the sit-in until their demands were met.

Noreen Khan told the media that the family would persist in their efforts. She expressed frustration that court orders regarding family access apparently go unimplemented.

The protests reference violence from May 9, October 4, and November 26 – dates when PTI clashed with law enforcement during demonstrations. These incidents have created ongoing tensions between Khan’s supporters and Pakistani authorities.

PTI officials maintain that their protests remain peaceful and lawful. They argue that denying family access to Imran Khan former leader violates basic human rights and legal standards. Meanwhile, authorities have not publicly explained the extended ban on family meetings or addressed the assault allegations against police personnel.
