What are STD Codes?
Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) allows users to contact other subscribers without the mediation of an operator. Also known as Subscriber Toll Dialling, STD was common back in the early 20th century when the operator helped in trunk calling to different parts in the country. The basic meaning of STD is to call on a landline number outside the local area from where the person is calling.
What is Mohali STD Code?
The Tricity area of Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali share the same STD code – 0172.
Tri means three. Thus, the word ‘Tricity’ is the amalgamation of the terms ‘three’ and ‘city’. The Tricity area includes three cities – Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali. Regionally speaking, Panchkula is a city in Haryana, Chandigarh is a Union Territory, and Mohali is a city in Punjab. Despite their borders, these cities are united due to their geographical proximity.
Apart from the main cities, the Tricity includes three towns that are located within 15 km from Chandigarh. Derabassi, Zirakpur, and Kharar are those towns. It is needless to say that these towns are included in the mention of Tricity across the area. The collective population of the Tricity area according to the 2011 census is 1,441,777. About 1.5 million people living in this area are residing in the three cities.
Why do they share the STD code of Mohali?
Earlier, the STD code of Mohali was different than that of Chandigarh for some time. This conflict arose because the Punjab telecom circle had a conflict about the revenue district that Mohali falls under. When the telecom companies changed the STD Code of Mohali to 0160 as a temporary measure, they did it to bring Mohali under the revenue district of Ropar. Later on, the telecom circle took back the measures and the STD Code of Mohali was back to 0172.
As of now, the Chandigarh Secondary Switching Area (SSA) includes Panchkula, Mohali, and Chandigarh. This means that for the Punjab telecom circle, the Tricity falls under the same revenue district of Chandigarh. There were demands from the Haryana side to include the areas falling under the 200 km limit from Panchkula in the same STD code. The people initiated this move because Panchkula comes in the state of Haryana. However, this move was impossible because Panchkula comes under the Punjab Telecom circle and not Haryana.
For this reason, Mohali shares the same STD Code with the area within 200 km from Panchkula on the Punjab side. To fulfill the demand of including the towns and areas of the Harayana side, the authorities would have to delink Panchkula from the Chandigarh SSA and include it in Harayana’s SSA. This would effectively change the STD code of Panchkula. But as of today, the Tricity of Panchkula, Mohali, and Chandigarh share the same STD code.
This has brought a sense of ease for the NRIs who dial regularly to their workplace or families in Mohali. The STD Code of Mohali and the neighboring cities of the Tricity area has always been 0172, for a very long time.

A Mohali court ruled that a sacked cop gets life term for woman’s murder, convicting dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rashpreet Singh in a 2022 case. Along with life imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000. The verdict came after he was found guilty of murder and destruction of evidence, though rape charges were not proven.
The case dates back to November 13, 2022, when 23-year-old nurse Naseeb Kaur went missing from her paying guest accommodation. The very next day, locals discovered her body in a pond at Sohana village under suspicious circumstances. Investigators later confirmed that Rashpreet had known the victim for years and shared a close personal link with her.
On the complaint of the victim’s father, police initially registered a rape and murder case against an unidentified person. However, during the investigation, Rashpreet, a resident of Sector 86, came under suspicion and was arrested. Evidence ruled out rape but clearly established murder and an attempt to erase proof of the crime.
